Answer four questions from the Indian Diabetes Risk Score, a validated screening tool built for Indian adults. You'll get your score, what it means and what you can change.
This check uses the Indian Diabetes Risk Score (Mohan V. et al., Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, 2005). It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis, and doesn't replace advice from your doctor. Only a blood test can tell you whether you have diabetes. See a doctor promptly if you have symptoms such as a lot of thirst, passing urine often, unexplained weight loss or blurred vision.
The Indian Diabetes Risk Score (IDRS) is a short questionnaire developed by Dr V. Mohan and colleagues at the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation in 2005. It uses four things (age, waist size, physical activity and family history) to estimate the risk of type 2 diabetes in Indian adults, and is widely used in screening programmes across India.
It is a screening tool, not a test. It is good at spotting people who should get a blood test, but it cannot tell you whether you have diabetes. Only a blood test, such as fasting blood sugar or HbA1c, can do that.
Fat stored around the middle is closely linked to insulin resistance, especially in South Asians, who tend to develop diabetes at a lower body weight than Western populations. That is why the IDRS uses waist size rather than weight.
Stand relaxed and breathe out normally. Wrap a soft tape measure around your bare waist, midway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone (usually just above the belly button). Keep it snug but not tight, and read the number.
No. Your answers are used to work out your score on this page and are not stored or shared.
